 PES Assessments and Case Studies
In 2005, Forest Trends developed a country-level inventory protocol to assess existing PES deals in Africa. This PES inventory was conducted in Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa in 2005; and in Tanzania and Madagascar in 2006. These inventories were designed to highlight the status of PES projects in the region and the gaps that need to be addressed in order to expand PES throughout the region. One of the most important findings is that PES projects are already widespread in the region. The inventories catalogue no fewer than 17 carbon projects, 18 biodiversity projects and 10 water projects. Money has already exchanged hands in 5 carbon projects, 2 biodiversity projects and 2 water projects. In addition, there are several projects that are already offering non-monetary compensation, especially in the case of biodiversity-based projects. For a full review of the region, please see the Current ‘State of Play’ of Carbon, Water, and Biodiversity Markets for an overview of Inventory findings.
